ASD CLASS
The class is divided into three Red Class (Ages 4-7), Green Class (Ages 7-10), and Blue Class (Ages 7-13). There are a total of 33 in the current session i.e. , 2024-25.
Daily Classes routines are as follows:
9:00-9:15 AM – Exercise Time: With the help of teachers they perform different types of exercises before the classes start, ending the session with the National Anthem.
9:15-9:30 AM – Devotion Time: During this time devotional songs are sung and Bible Verses are read out to them. They also learn Bible verses and individual items like singing and recitation are also incorporated.
9:30-9:45 AM – Attendance Time: Attendance Poster is hung in their classrooms in which the child identifies who are in attendance and who are not. This is another form of activity for the attendees.
9:45-9:55 AM – Toilet Time: They go to toilet by themselves.
10:00-10:45 AM – Study Time: During this time every child is taught according to his/her ability. Every child differ and those in the same class are also taught a different thing.
10:45-11:10 AM – Music or Story Time is allotted during this period.
11:10 AM-12:00 PM – They eat their tiffin after washing their hands and prayers are done. Those younger ones who are not yet capable to eat by themselves are fed by the teachers. After they finish their tiffin, they brush their teeth and wash up, completing with putting away their tiffin boxes and towels.
12:00-12:30 PM – Break Time
12:30-1:00 PM – Library Time: They are helped with reading stories and going through different picture books.
1:00-1:30 PM – Activity Time: Different activities like dusting, sweeping, creative work, sewing, arts & crafts are taught and done.
1:30-2:00 – Snack Time: After they finish their snacks, every child puts away their stuff in each of their bags neatly. They go home after prayers.
Besides the mentioned, Sand Play and different types of fun games are performed. Fruit Fest are also held according to the season, Colorful Day and National & State Festivals are also celebrated with them, dressing up for each occasion.
ID Class
The class is divided into three according to their degree and severity of mental capacity.
- Pre-School: Children ages 5-8 are placed in here according to their IQ levels, but older child with low IQ are also placed in the class. It is further divided into two groups A & B.
Toilet training, socialization, eliminating bad habits, simple activities like raising hands, stomping, etc are taught in Group A. There are a total of 6 with 1 teacher.
In Group B are placed those who have a higher understanding consisting of 6 children with 1 teacher. Here they are taught self-help skills like eating, using sign, gestures or speech when in need of toileting, identifying one’s own items, identifying classmates with their names, simple command, identifying body parts, socializing, and other activities like fun games.
- Primary Class: Ages 8-12 are placed in this class and those with higher intellect and ability. They are able to take care of themselves and are taught skills and activities which could help them in their day to day lives. Functional Academics like number and alphabets are taught to read and write, directions, identification & recognition of colors, shapes/size, fruits/vegetables, animals (domestic/wild), vehicles, clothes and body parts. Dressing – buttoning, unbuttoning, zipping/unzipping, wearing socks & shoes/ tying or clipping shoes, different types of clothes in accordance with seasons and many types of co-curricular activities are also performed. There are 14 children with 1 Special Educator.
- Secondary Class: This class accommodates children of 12-17 years. Being older in ages and of higher intellect, they are more advanced in their skills are able to do things on their own. They are taught daily living grooming them to be more independent for their later lives. Some of them with higher IQ are taught mainstream syllabus and currently studying in Standard IV. They also have many co-curricular activities. Secondary class consists of 14 students looked after by 1 special educator and 1 attendant.Most of the children with Intellectual Disability take part in Scouts & Guides. The class also takes up individual and group teaching. Therapies like Occupational Therapy & Speech Therapy are also provided according to their needs.
Gilead Vocational Training Centre
Currently, the Vocational Training Centre has 10 trainees. Those who had been enrolled at Gilead Special School but are old enough to be trained are place in this VTC. The centre has 4 PwD workers, who have been in the school since young age and have been well trained. Besides them there are also 3 staff to look after the Centre. Envelope making, paper plate making in different sizes and tailoring are taken up and the finished products are then sold in to Government offices, Churches, supplied in market and to well-wishers.
Pre-Vocational
Currently Pre-vocational class consist of 15 students, who are divided in to 2 sections. The division is done according to individual ability. 8:30-10:00 AM is reserved for functional academic. The rest of the day is spent for vocational training like paper cutting and doormat making. Besides these, they also spent time for co-curricular activities on some days. They help in the production of VTC items.
CP Pre-School
They consist of ages 2-10 years. Those who are able to read and write later placed in academic class when they reach 5/6 years. Those unable are placed in Leisure Learning Unit. Fine motor, gross motor, and eye hand co-ordination are taught by performance which is activity based. They are taught self-help activity in accordance with their ability. Language and Communication play an important part in their day to day learning.
Leisure Learning Unit: Small household tasks are taught according to their ability. Daily living skills & Self-help skills are taught, guiding them to be independent. Reading and writing are taught to those that are abled. Music and reading also play an important part.
Hearing Impairment
Academic teaching take an important part for these students, from Std I-X. Computer classes are provided to those who have completed their Xth Standard.
After the school assembly, the classes begin with a News class. Besides their academic class, the following curricular are also provided in the afternoon: Monday Bible study, Tuesday Art & Craft, Wednesday & Thursday ASL Class, and Friday Games & Sports.
Computer classes end at 11:30 AM with practical, after which they go to Vocational Training Center.
